What is PrEP?
PrEP is medication taken to prevent HIV, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Common medications for PrEP include:
HIV is spread through contact with bodily fluids, including blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk. People who are exposed to these body fluids that may contain HIV have a risk of getting HIV.
How do I know if PrEP is right for me?
Most commonly, people are prescribed PrEP for one or more of the following reasons:
You have unprotected sex with a partner who is unsure if they have HIV
You have sex with a partner who has HIV
You have multiple and/or anonymous sexual partners. This can include (but is not limited to) participating in sex clubs, sex work, and polyamory.
A sexual partner of yours has multiple and/or anonymous sexual partners.
You have been diagnosed with another STI in the last year.
You inject substances, such as hormones or IV recreational drugs
A sexual partner of yours or you are receiving post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and have either used PEP multiple times or are involved in work or behaviors that may make future use of PEP necessary.
You would like to be on PrEP for other reasons

How do you manage PrEP?
PrEP may require labs to monitor your kidney function, depending on which medication you take. PrEP near me typically requires visits every 3 months for labs for STI testing. We partner with Quest Diagnostics for laboratory services.
We can work with you to help get PrEP approved by your insurance or find low-cost options in Washington state.
